Downtime

Hello all! Sorry for the lack of updates, but as you may know, I was in Chicago most of last week. When I returned home, my allergies / sinus problems thoroughly kicked in, so I've been down most of the weekend.

Back at work today, doing very little. I managed to combine just the right amounts of Sudafed, Zicam, and Claritin to moderately subdue my symptoms and not knock myself flat on my @$$. I'm drowsy, but that's to be expected. Just no operating of heavy machinery anytime soon.

I haven't had a chance to do much with Foresight over the last week, between the trip and the sickness, but I do intend to get a fresh start on some packaging and try to contribute more.

Zombie March Chicago

I am so, SO very excited. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've recently rediscovered a love for zombie movies. The wife and I are leaving town to go to Chicago for a few days tomorrow morning (vacation for me, training/vacation for her). Coincidentally, tomorrow afternoon from 2-6pm, an event is being held in the loop, downtown Chicago.

If I had known about this event a bit further in advance, I might have been able to come up with a costume and participate, but as it stands, I'll probably just try to get our bags dropped off at the hotel and get back to the loop with my camera by 2pm. When/if I get some decent pics, I'll post them up on Flickr and make another post here about it.

I giggled like a schoolgirl and clapped my hands at work (making my officemate noticeably disturbed).

More news as it arises!

D&D Group Get-together

Last night, the group that I regularly play D&D with got together at BD's Mongolian Grill because Chris and Gergana are in town. They currently live in New York City, and are getting married this Saturday in Lexington. Sadly, the wife and I will have to miss their wedding, as we will be in Chicago during that time. Anyway, we had a decent meal (mongolian buffet is always fun) decided to go to Culver's for some frozen custard. All in all, I had a great time, and it was a lot of fun getting to catch up with Chris and Gergana. Here's a photo taken by our waiter at BD's.

There's another one in my Flickr account, but it turned out blurry for about half the table, so I didn't think it merited being added to this post.

Congratulations Chris and Gery! Sorry we won't be there.

Zombie Fest

I don't know what got me thinking about it, really... I think I found a copy of Dawn of the Dead (2004) on my jumpdrive, and decided I wanted to know more about zombie movie zistory. A quick Google search later, and I stumbled upon the following, which is an EXCELLENT resource for the aspiring zombie movie buff.

Zombie Movie History @ Best-horror-movies.com

Reading through that page gave me an insight into the long-lived history of the zombie movie, dating back as far as 1932, with White Zombie. One of my most vivid memories from childhood is watching the original Romero classic, Night of the Living Dead. I'm also a huge fan of Shaun of the Dead.

Basically what I'm getting at is I'd like to put together a ZombieFest, just some people getting together and watching a bunch of zombie flicks just for the sake of watching them. (Including, most likely, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead (1978), Zombi 2 (Zombie in the USA), and whatever else.

I'll probably end up just watching them by myself, which is totally cool, but if anyone else is interested, I'm searching around to see what I've got access to (public domain, Netflix "watch now", divx, etc.). And on that note, of course, here's Night of the Living Dead on Google Video (public domain).

Oh, another really cool part of the site I visited earlier was the "Ask a Zombie Master" section. Lots of fun Q&A.

ProActive 5k Race Results in!

Well, as many of you know, I participated in the ProActive 5k for Life Run/Walk on 6/13/08. Here were a few of the results:

Fastest Time
Bice, David - 16:45.01

My Time
Keyes, Jordan - 40:50.69

Slowest Time
Douglas, Alecia - 1:01:33.69

So, I wasn't anywhere near the front of the pack, but I wasn't at the end either. I would have finished quite a bit sooner, but I went over 1/2 way through the race side-by-side with the wife. I kept prodding her to run, but she just couldn't keep up, so more than halfway through, I took off on my own.

I think if I had gone it on my own from the beginning, I probably could have finished in 35 minutes. My goal is to be in good enough shape for the next one I'd like to participate in (there are several coming up, but I'm looking to one in October for the next one) to finish in under 30 minutes.

1st BGLUG meeting successful, Starbucks Wifi = a sham

The BGLUG had its first official evening meeting yesterday from 2-4pm (even though we didn't really leave Starbucks until 5pm or so). We had a total of 6 members in attendance, including one person completely new to the group. We discussed all sorts of linux-related topics, showed off some programs we enjoy and have helped in creating / packaging, and generally just had some fun.

The one big flaw in that day's plan was that the "Free Wi-Fi" at Starbucks was broken. When we arrived, there were two wireless access points in range, "188" and "188ALT". "188ALT" was encrypted, so we knew that wasn't the appropriate point, and in trying to connect to "188", it failed every time. When we were ordering food/drinks, I asked them what their wireless info was, to make sure they didn't have a hidden SSID. Their response was that the wireless was broken. Being the good geeks that we are, we offered to fix it for free, but the manager quickly stepped in and said no. So basically, false advertising by Starbucks.

I took a couple of pictures of their sign advertising the "Free Wi-Fi":

I'll be going to the Starbucks here in Frankfort soon to try out their Wi-Fi (and have some coffee, of course). If they're having problems as well, I might just put in a call to Starbucks and/or AT&T and see if they know about their false advertising. :P

To recap: IRL BGLUG meeting = good, Starbucks Wifi = crap.

To those of you reading from http://planet.foresightlinux.org, I'd just like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Jordan, and I'm a Foresight Linux user.

I'm a 26 year old living in the United States, in Frankfort, Kentucky. I am a Network Analyst for the Kentucky Department of Education - Cabinet for Workforce Development. I support mostly Windows servers and a few Solaris/Unix servers. I have been using Linux full-time since February of 2007, but sporadically since 2001. I had a roommate in college who showed me that there were other things out there besides Windows, and though I couldn't make the switch full-time until just recently, I feel that Linux has been a big part of my life ever since then.

I first heard of Foresight from etank shortly after he started using it. I decided to give it a shot on my new laptop, since I had just purchased it and certainly didn't want to be using Vista. From that time I realized that Foresight has a community that I could grow to be a part of, and a development environment that I can actually participate in. I began working with etank and mkj at the Foresight 20/20 conference in April, and haven't looked back.

Yes, I realize that most of this post was directly copied/pasted from my Foresight wiki page, but it says a lot about me without having to retype.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to doing more as a member of the Foresight community (and hopefully as a developer eventually!).

Posting from Lynx

I'm testing something at the moment... I'm SSH'd into my Ubuntu box at home, running Lynx, and posting here.
Looks like it's working well so far. If this does work, I may try it more often. It's a little weird to look at, but definitely functional. For those that aren't familiar with it, Lynx is a command-line web browser, so I'm not seeing any graphics, just a lot of text.

The Foresight higher-ups had a FOCUS meeting today (Foresight council meeting).

In this morning’s FOCUS meeting, three new members were approved: jkeyes0 (me!), Zinden, and LanceHaig.

I’m glad to be a part of the Foresight community, and I look forward to contributing in any way that I can.

Expo!

Every year about this time, Frankfort experiences the Expo. I'm not really sure of the meaning behind the event, or why they have it during one of the hottest times of the year, but it's certainly fun. It's like a carnival, with all sorts of food, a few rides, and performances on stage. If I remember correctly, it culminates with a fireworks show this Saturday night.

I went to the Expo over lunch today. There was a plethora of food, so I had a really difficult time deciding. I met up with some old friends for lunch there (Mark and Louise, the short one), and ended up settling on a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. Mmmmm. I went back over my afternoon break (I love working for the state. All sorts of breaks!) and got a bag of cotton candy. Not as good as I remembered, but that may have something to do with the sweltering heat (it was at least 90 degrees today!).

This evening, the wife and I went back to the expo (yeah, we go a lot) for dinner. I got a couple of hot dogs and a thing of nachos, and the wife got a pulled port sandwich, chips and beans. She was upset because her sandwich didn't come with BBQ sauce, but with the price of everything at the Expo, I'm not surprised they skimped out on the BBQ (her plate was $7, with no drink).

Afterward, I went to SuperCuts and got my head shaved. My head feels about 10lbs lighter.

Time to do some work for Foresight. Just working on packaging some applications at this point. The packaging contest is over, but I really want to be a Foresight developer, so I'm happy to continue contributing to the community and the distro.
